It offers me something zen: on my patio, admiring the lake and mountains, tea or scotch in hand and genuinely appreciating the moment for simply what it is.

What I find hilarious is the obsession that some people can foment about cigar smoking (or anythings really) and how that removes the very essence of what I love about it. I love that it's a break for me and only me. I think this post (form cigaraficionado.com) sums up how blind people can get once they are immersed in their obsession. The reference is often made that cigars are some kind of phallic appropriation of masculinity for men. I guess this is why it's considered a manly thing or why we get so excited seeing women smoke them. But what I've done is replaced the word "cigar" with "cock". The result speaks for itself. Happy reading.

"When I was handed the cock, I knew immediately it was something special. The heft of the canonazo size, as it is called in the factories here—a corona gorda girth with a bit more length—felt perfect in my hand. The darkish skin, leaning toward what the Cubans define as maduro, was sleek to the touch, the oils giving not only a visible sheen but a slight oiliness in my hand.

I clipped it carefully, and the cock resisted the cut just a little bit, like it wasn’t ready to be smoked. A perfect fill resists the cutter’s blade just a little bit. I licked the cock, and it took the burn easily and quickly, getting that full red glow around the tip almost without effort.

My first impression wasn’t the flavor, but the completeness and complexity of the cock. It was mouth-filling, triggering a salivary festival, without a touch of dryness. The attack on my tongue was smooth and rich, and the finish lingered all the way to back of my mouth. I’ve seen cockmakers gesture with their hand, a kind of full moon circle, describing how a cock can stimulate every part of the mouth. This cock had that quality.

The flavors had a smooth earthiness, with just that touch of sweetness, one that I describe often as cocoa bean. It wasn’t overly powerful or strong; it didn’t have that mind-bending quality of many cocks today, with too much nicotine in the balls. As the cock burned past the halfway, the intensity of the flavors built and then turned a bit more toward earth and spice, but again, without a touch of dryness.

All in all, a truly great cock."

Written by Gordon Mott. That combined with being super busy (lil babies take a lot of one's free time) has resulted in poor blogoutput. In the mean time, enjoy eargoggles, a great site or video zine or some such profiling bands and their performances at the recently yuppied Cobalt. But this was recorded before that metamorphosis. I recommend you check out China Creeps, B-Lines, the Nobunny performance has a little shock to it, Shearing Pinx are also great. Bison BC and Hellacaust are metal and sincere about it.

Tell em!

*sigh*, don't believe the hype. Janelle Monae's and Sleigh Bells' full

length debuts were my most anticipated releases of 2010. Janelle's

lead single Tightrope has been my feel good jam of the year, and the video

subtly outdoes the choreographed dance moves of its peers with an easy

and relaxed confidence. The follow up, Cold War, is a straight up Top

40 dance floor burner reminiscent of Gnarls Barkley's Going On that

furthered the promise that the record would use the building blocks of soul

and funk to forge something fantastical steeped in tradition and

nostalgia while keeping an eye on the innovation and excitement of the

future. Sleigh Bells are the first indie band to appropriate club

influences in a totally awesome way, stripped of any restraint or

irony and Crown on the Ground and A/B Machines are just great, great

songs. Both records leaked around the same time, and what seemed to be my

surefire favorites of the year quickly became my biggest

disappointments.

Promo for Janelle Monae's the Archandroid promised futuristic,

blissed-out party jams, but instead delivers warmed-over psychedelia

and stiff robo-funk. It starts off with a long intro track, which

effectively builds anticipation...then *bam*! The first song kicks in,

and there's nothing behind the curtain. The next few tracks are fine,

but they feel like they're building momentum towards something better,

and don't stand on their own. Track five is a chilled out transition

and...finally! We get to the one-two punch of Cold War and Tightrope,

which are great on their own, but stand out oddly against what came

before. There's yet another transition immediately after and less

than half way through, the record's spent. The rest of the album feels

like an unnecessarily long comedown from a wild ride that never

happened. The stylistic shifts are so dramatic and the tracks so

forgettable, that it feels more like a shitty mixtape than a cohesive

album. By the time it reaches its meandering conclusion, the

Archandroid feels less like a debut and more the product of a veteran

artist who's creatively spent and blindly throwing themselves into

several different styles in a last gasp attempt for relevancy. For me,

that's what's so disappointing. This IS her debut and it's Janelle

declaring "This is who I am!" to the world, which makes me doubt her

ability to ever really put together an album with any sense of

purpose, cohesion or genuine fun.

Sleigh Bells' Treats is less outright disappointing, there's just not

much new here for anyone who's listened to their EP. The first track,

Tell Em, is the only great new song they've written and while the

blown-out production is a great aesthetic that brings out the elegant

simplicity of their older songs, the new tracks feel underwritten.

They're more atonal and synth-driven, a noticeable shift from the warm

hooks and melodies that Sleigh Bells blasted into the stratosphere on

their earlier material. Also, Alexis' often cooes where I feel like

she should snarl, which makes me feel like I'm listening to something

that was initially quiet that was bumped into the red post-production,

rather than a loud and crazy sound pushed to it's logical extreme.

I've wondered if I would have liked this album more if I'd never heard

their EP, but it doesn't ultimately change my opinion that there are

less great songs on this album than there are mediocre and

transitional tracks, which seem largely built from similar riffs as

their better songs. I still have hope for them, but their debut is so

short yet so full of filler and their sound is so of the moment that

it really makes me wonder if they'll really ever fulfill their

potential before their buzz band luster fades.

Anyways, I'm bummed, but check out their cool shit here:

Janelle Monae - Tightrope:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xktMnfb0Q0A

Sleigh Bells- Tell Em:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kJ05P-71gY

Mickey - She's So Crazy!

This is off Hozac Records who've been releasing some cool shit through their singles club. They are one of the more exciting new bands I’ve seen in Vancouver.

On record, Nu Sensae are all black bile and gnashed teeth, but live they act listless and bored. They seemed unimpressed with the crowd. The feeling was mutual.

And finally...HEALTH! First, some backstory: At the Drive-In’s last few years have always been the gold standard by which I measure the intensity of rock performance; I’ve been searching for the new kings of spazz ever since their 2001 break-up. I’ve casually listened to HEALTH’s albums, but it was live footage and word of mouth that brought me out to the Biltmore.

Verdict: HEALTH is a solid “B” to At the Drive-In’s “A+”...there are groups like Monotonix and Girl Talk who hype up the crowd more, but for onstage energy, HEALTH is just about unbeatable. And yet... the vibe was off that night...the venue felt relatively empty, they played a 30 minute set with a short encore and there wasn’t much interaction with the audience or even between band members. This was one of the first dates on their upcoming tour, so they were just getting back into it.

Regardless, their live energy is undeniable. They tour a lot. Go see them.

http://www.myspace.com/healthmusic
http://www.myspace.com/nusensae
http://www.myspace.com/mythsband

HEALTH mesmerize...

But At the Drive-in...always and forever

Vapid - Practically Dead LP

This is a disappointment. Their E.P. captured the live sound - it was less produced, raw and had a simply balanced aggressiveness with a little bit of cuteness. Shimmy in the shakedown, do the Earthquake? Cute. But this L.P. comes across as mediocre- it would be at home alongside Veruca Salt, Celebrity Skin era Hole and other shitty 90s bands you were happy to forget. I believed in these guys. I thought they'd strive for better because I knew they were capable of it. As I mentioned in the last post about them, they weren't by any means brilliant or earth shattering, but I really thought they had potential. I compared them to X-Ray Spex! I didn't upload the whole album, you don't want it. I've uploaded the two versions of Do the Earthquake for comparison. Tell me you didn't cringe at number 2.

Solars @ VIVO 01/29/10

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HP1vzucZkiE/S2ePaXVvgnI/AAAAAAAAAAk/FfXvg7OvWR0/s400/soalrs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433469158550372978" />
Ascending to heaven. They take a little from post-punk dance for their rhythm section, but use strange altered sounds and tape loops. Really, it just sounds like a good time. Also, I like that it's on cassette. In a city that where we keep our distance, their shows dissolve these barriers, the band and audience merging into a single, throbbing organism, all slaves to the pulse.

This was the first show I've seen them open; people nodded attentively to the beat and there an older lady who hopped up on stage to get her rave on, but the overall experience was more subdued than the celebratory release I've come to expect. This was the first time I've noticed that they've sterilized their sound since their from Spain. What initially drew me to Basketball was they felt like an evil version of Animal Collective, with an organic warmth to their largely electronic sound and their ability to appropriate middle eastern influences in a way that felt natural and sincere. But instead of AC's 3 part harmonies and tribal chants, Basketball painted in the colors with a hybrid of HEALTH's sputtering robo-thrash and Gang Gang Dance's weirdo-world music. Now, their sound is more straight up club; they're playing most of the same songs as when they left but I think they used to pump their backing tracks through amps, rather than straight through the PA,and mixed in more live instrumentation. I hope that shift back to that set up in the future, because the set I saw felt like the pod-people version of Basketball, all the pieces I've always loved were there, but something was off.

The crowd lost their shit when Japandroids took the stage; this is the first band to really break out of the East Van scene since pretty much forever, but the sound dampened what was otherwise an all out celebration. The guitar initially started off too clean and dull, each hit ending with a muted click on the strings and while the tone and volume improved as the set went on, it felt leaden in comparison to the earth-flattening distortion that's been a staple on all their releases. The band put on a spirited performance, but like the sound, it felt ragged and worn-out. They were rocking out hard, but I could feel the tiredness in their bones from the endless promotion and touring over the last year in support of their new record. But the audience...from crowd surfing to a rousing sing-a-long to Young Hearts Spark Fire, I was feeling the love. Both during and after the show, I heard lots of "oh my god!", "YESSS!!" and "this is amazing!", as if Japandroids was causing spontaneous orgasms throughout the crowd through the sheer force of their rocknroll power. So, maybe the night was really everything I'd hoped it to be, but it was just too late and I was too tired for me to appreciate it. Just maybe. Oh, they also didn't play Wet Hair, I love that song. Bummer.

Hunx and his Punx - The Gay Singles

This started out for me as a silly unpretentious meandering of garage rock, but quickly grew trite and gimmicky. Honestly, I thought the gay-ness of it started to get to be a bit much. As in, "Can't he write a song about anything else?" But I now think that that attitude shows a bit of my homophobia seeping out (we all have some, I'm just trying to fix mine). It's sort of close to the same mentality as, "Be as gay as you want, I just don't want to have to look at it." Well FUCK that. How many albums of pure hetero-love/lust songs are out there? Too many. I'm still on the lookout, so more will surely come soon. In the meantime I found this album which I quite like. They've combined a garage reverb twang with post-punk and hardcore speed and flat vocals. I guess it makes sense that following my recent punk appreciation would come a post-punk appreciation. Don't expect dance beats or anything like that, I think punk is such a loose term that post-punk can't be too defined itself. These are short and punchy tunes, but Le Face (of L.A.) have taken the punk feeling and atmosphere and developed it into something a bit barer and more dynamic.

At some moments, however, this record falls a bit too much into the flatness and frankly I get bored. This band is best when they follow that almost New-Wave dynamism.

High points: Salvador Dali, Christian Cunt.

X-Ray Spex- Germfree Adolescents

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 252px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_5O8TCXeyhUw/SwGsq5bHooI/AAAAAAAAADs/qpo0HN8xBnA/s400/X-Ray_Spex_-_Germ_Free_Adolescents_album_cover.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404790880790356610" />

Oh X-Ray Spex, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways:

1. A post-apocalyptic critique of commercial modernity.
2. Poly Styrene. A nerdy screechy visionary.
3. You sound like a good time.
4. Your aesthetic for me is an angry filthy pet rat tearing through a neon sanitary shopping mall.

X Ray Spex introduced me to a whole new way music and anger in music could be expressed. I had known punk to be fast, aggressive and loud. They showed me it didn't necessarily have to be so. It could be insightful and critical and silly. For me that doesn't discount their anger, it supports it. Alas, they released only one real album, disbanded, then re-banded recently (which was pathetic and ordinary). Perhaps a flash in the pan, but for me at least, an important one.

Victory Square

<img style="MARGIN: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; It’s such a niche genre, that I felt like I’d experienced everything it’s had to offer after hearing a handful of songs. It can be fun to party to, but it’s just not my thing. So, I avoided them for a while in spite of many enthusiastic recommendations, my eyes glazing over as soon as anyone exclaimed, “Yeah, the Dreadnoughts! Celtic-punks! They rock!”.

So, it surprised me when their sophomore release, Victory Square, quickly became my favourite local release this year, as well as held up to my more college-radio approved picks of 2009 like Merriweather Post Pavilion and Hospice. For all the celtic-punk staples about drinking and the oompa-oompa bass, there’s something darker and more profound that runs through this album’s veins. Their world influences create a sense myth and romance, rather than background muzak for coffee shops . In their own way, the Dreadnoughts exist in the same realm as Tom Waits and Beirut, their songs painting fever visions of a re-imagined past, equal parts danger and intrigue. Even the reference to Victory Square and the cover photo feel more Old World than East Van.

But the album is stronger than just this aesthetic; the songwriting is above and beyond their peers`. They embrace virtuosity over the intentional amateurism of most punk, without losing the reckless enthusiasm that’s helped forge the genre. The dueling mandolin and violin leads burn with the same intensity as the most fist pumping metal solos but without the cheese and self-indulgent wankery, while the rhythm section stomps through every track with a demonic thunder . For all the bombast, all these elements work together to bring out the songs’ core hooks and melodies, which buried themselves deep within my brain by the third spin.

So, check ‘em out, this album is what I wish Gogol Bordello sounded like, and the production stands up to many higher profile releases.

I’ve included the gypsy-thrasher Samovar, ancient lament From the West, and the scathing mandolin/violin duel of the Skrigjaargen Polka for your listening pleasure:

<?xml:namespace prefix = o />Dreadnoughts

You can check out more on their myspace:

http://www.myspace.com/vancitydreadnoughts

Buy the album here

The Worst- play Tunes from the Tomb

<img style="display:block; Is that a style?

I found this E.P. digging through a record store's collection. They were moving, and dumping a lot of inexpensive stuff. It's almost the best way of finding music. The risk is so minimal! A buck for 2 e.p.'s? I bought this along with a single called "Male Stripper" by Man 2 Man vs. Manparrish (more on that gem later) and I was thrilled to have a a local disc in hands of unpretentious Hallowe'en rock. The sleeve tells me it was recorded in Van, and produced (or at least pressed) in Koln, Germany. A few things were stolen including my Macbook charger. These cost 100$ and I'm poor so I can't replace it right away. I decided to explain this here because theft happens fequently to musicians, and also because I'm sort of implicit in some theft, by posting music here. I'm not going to stop- I've sort of rationalized it to myself in that I'm celebrating local culture. But it's theft nonetheless. I mean, if these artists really wanted their music to be available widespread free, wouldn't they have posted their material? Oh well. I'll post more soon.

Demon's Claws - Demon's Claws

Garage psych from Montreal today. I think there's an equal balance between chunky breaks and drone. Think of Liars, but more rock oriented. Shearing Pinx release a lot, which I love in a band. This results in some stronger efforts, and some weaker ones, but the process of recording and doing your own releasing constantly makes for overall a better picture of what you want to say. Their sound I find quite unique. It's edgy and aggressive with some vulnerability and self consciousness floating around. I'm sure this vision has been perfected by the practice of recording constantly. The fact that they choose to release so much might seem self indulgent, but I think they're just making their process evident to others who may well be interested.

Pointed Sticks - 1980 Demo

Pointed Sticks have become darlings of the Vancouver punk scene because of their history in it, the numerous bands that site them as influence, Narduar's vocal appreciation, and the recent reissue of their album. I believe it's well deserved - they've written fantastic songs that touch upon snottiness, but are by no means obsessed with it. This is a bootleg of a demo. I find that often punk bands can be emotive and a little whiney or snotty and a little obnoxious and mindless. My favorite punk bands realize the potential emotional resources of both. When the B-lines singer sings about being a "Social Retard" he knows it's offensive, and I think he knows why and why it should be, and uses that offense to solidify that he is uh... socially ... I'm going to say "inept". Similarly, Pointed Sticks sing about girls and breaking up and social-bones-to-pick but not whiningly. What do you think?

Isotopes - Heatseeker E.P.

This band is baseball themed. Ok, they love the Jam - in their harmonies, construction, hooks, looks. But don't discount them, the Tranzmitors write great songs. They have a knack for the pop genre, but it's not wrapped up in its tidiness nor is it unauthentic. And they're great live. Go see them if you get a chance. I don't delude myself into thinking this blog has a readership of more than three, but if you do read this (anyone at all?) and live in Vancouver, they're playing tomorrow at Pat's. This is the e.p., I have another album if you likes it.

Beat Happening - S.T.

This is an album that I'm not crazy about, but am interested to share, mostly because I want to hear opinions.
